Medical

There are two three general hospitals servicing the area.

Barnet General in Wellhouse Lane is part of the Royal Free London NHS Trust group. Tel: 020 3758 2000.

Chase Farm is part of the same trust. Situated on The Ridgeway, Enfield. The contact number is the same as for Barnet i.e. 020 3758 2000.

The New QEII is at Howlands in Welwyn Garden City. Website newqeii.info/ The Urgent Care Centre (UCC) is open 24/7. The out-of-hours GP service operates from 18:30 to 08:00 24/7. It is accessed via 111.New QEII is run by East & North Hertfordshire NHS Trust and Hertfordshire Community NHS Trust.

Potters Bar Community Hospital does not offer an Accident & Emergency Service (A&E). It has one inpatient ward and is typically used by residents for blood tests and Moorfields eye services. The contact number is (01707) 653286. The hospital is situated off Barnet Road on the edge of the town. 

There are numerous GP surgeries.

U3A

The area boasts a popular and active U3A group at Potters Bar. Monthly lectures are held at the Wyllyotts Centre.

Games

Chess is represented by just one club in the area, albeit a very successful one. 

Little Heath, Brookmans Park & Potters Bar Chess Club (typically known as Little Heath) play in the Herts League Divisions 1 (current champions), 3 (promoted) and 6. They also run an U120 grade team.

By contrast there are several bridge clubs.

Transport

Potters Bar and Cuffley are both served by trains from Moorgate and Finsbury Park but split just after Alexandra Palace. Cuffley sits on the Hertford loop terminating at Hertford North. The two line route passes through several ‘country’ stations.

By contrast trains to Potters Bar follow the four track mainline and terminate at Welwyn Garden City.

Potters Bar is also served by fast trains into Kings Cross.

North – South connections are well established with the additional convenience of Northern Line tube services from High Barnet and Piccadilly Line trains from Cockfosters.

The main bus hub is at Potters Bar station.

There are several particularly well-run FB groups catering for Potters Bar in particular.

Hanny Lou runs Potters Bar Residents Page. This is great landing page for an introduction to the town.

Jill Hellary is the owner of several history sites typically in the form x – A Trip Down Memory Lane. These include Potters Bar, South Mimms, Northaw, and Little Heath & Brookmans Park.

Two groups Potters Bar – Support Local Directory and Christmas in Potters Bar are run by Lynette Sullivan.

Potters Bar Neighbourhood Watch is a popular and well-used site alerting members to incidents and offering crime prevention advice in close co-operation with the police. Scams and Criminal Activity in Potters Bar complements PBNW by looking at more detail at current activity.

Potters Bar Families is an increasingly popular site primarily for people with childcare responsibilities. There is no commercial advertising thereby ensure a clean, easy to search layout.

Villages of South Herts seeks to cater for all the settlements immediately outside of Potters Bar. It includes many aspects of specialist groups including Neighbourhood Watch.

Potters Bar Debate Group is for people who enjoy a civilised discussion of current hot topics (and some fun ones too).

Pubs

The age of the public house is under serious challenge with many having been closed and converted.

The Chequers at Coopers Lane is now one of the oldest pubs dating back to….Situated at the old hamlet of Coopers Lane it has a quiet atmosphere.

The Cask and Stillage is a lively establishment n the High street.

At Little Heath, the Builders Arms is well established dating back to…

The Admiral Byng is named after the Royal Navy Admiral executed ‘pour encourager les autres’. The premises are unusual in that in no so distant times they were the site of Bejam / Iceland.

The Old Manor at Wyllyotts Manor is a reasonably recent conversion from the old manor house.

The Strafford Arms, opposite the Furzefield Centre has a long heritage.

South Mimms supports two pubs. The White Hart would’ve been popular in past times sitting on the main London to St Albans Road.

The Black Horse is tucked away down Blackhorse Lane.

Ridge has the Old Guinea.

Sibthorpe Arms, Welham Green.

Brookmans

The Duke of York is another old-established pub at Ganwick Corner.
